Pioneer Broiler Chicks
Pioneer Broilers are a slower-growing, active broiler variety ideal for pasture-based and free-range systems. Unlike fast-growing Cornish Cross, Pioneers reach a processing weight of 5–6 pounds in 9 to 11 weeks, offering firmer meat, excellent flavor, and a more traditional growth rate.
These birds are well-suited to outdoor conditions, with strong legs, good foraging ability, and better overall mobility and heat tolerance than commercial broilers. They're perfect for homesteaders and small farms looking for a balance between natural growth and efficient meat production.
Pioneer Broilers offer a more active, resilient alternative to commercial hybrids—ideal for those who value flavor, sustainability, and traditional poultry-raising practices.
Feeding Suggestions
- Starter (0–3 weeks): Use a 20–22% protein broiler or all-flock starter feed to support healthy early growth.
- Grower (3–8 weeks): Transition to an 18–20% protein grower feed to encourage steady muscle development.
- Finisher (last 1–2 weeks): Optionally, reduce to 16–18% protein to improve meat quality and texture.
- Always provide clean water, and consider supplementing with access to pasture or greens to support natural behavior and nutrient variety.
