French Wheaten Marans are a striking and productive heritage breed, prized for their rich egg color and elegant appearance. Hens lay approximately 150–200 large eggs per year, known for their deep chocolate-brown shells, though the shade can vary slightly between birds. They typically reach maturity around 20–24 weeks, with steady laying beginning shortly after. This breed is dual-purpose, with hens averaging 6–7 lbs and roosters 7–8 lbs when fully grown. Hens display a soft wheaten (golden-tan) body with darker shading in the tail, while roosters are more vibrant—featuring golden hackles, deep red shoulders, and a contrasting black chest and tail. As a French variety, they have light feathering on their legs and feet, which adds to their unique look.
